Nobody believed I could come back against Serena Williams-Karolina Pliskova

Speaking to reporters in Doha ahead of the Qatar Total Open, as quoted by the WTA website, Karolina Pliskova recalled her Australian Open quarter-final win over Serena Williams. The American did not convert four match points in the third set ending up losing the remaining six games in the match. “Nobody believed I could turn the match around from 5-1, not even me! I don’t think she’s ever lost a match like this, from 5-1 up. Normally she takes control of these matches and is able to close because she’s so strong on serve and return. That game was a bit lucky; she had some match points, and they called a foot fault. A lot happened in that one game, but from there, I just tried to hold my serve, and I got some chances. She still had more match points, but I played great tennis – even she said it – in those moments because I just went for it", said Pliskova.

The 26-year-old played a great match against Simona Halep. "Not an easy start of the year by playing so many good players already", admitted the Czech. "It's only second month, and I have played I think four, five, six Grand Slam winners. But pleased with that that I have a good start, and I feel like I can build on these matches what I have played. Obviously beating the players which were lower ranked behind me, it's always good. I have a lot of matches which I won in the first month, which is always good to start the season like this'.
