Serena Williams can become a bigger threat, says Blackman
In an interview to Reuters Martin Blackman, the general manager for the player development at the United States Tennis Association, commented on the Serena Williams' chances at the French Open. The American said: "Hopefully Serena is healthy enough to play. She’s such a professional that she doesn’t play unless she’s healthy, especially Grand Slams, So if she does, I think with every match that she wins she becomes a bigger and bigger threat.”
Blackman feels confident about Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys' chances: “Clay is a great surface for Sloane. She’s such a good mover, she’s so good at opening the court, and she has so many different ways to hurt you. And she is getting more and more comfortable at the net. Madison recently made a coaching change, she’s working with (Juan) Nacho Todero and I think they are in a really good place. She’s healthy, she’s fit and if she gets to the second week, she’s super dangerous.”
Speaking about the men's side, Blackman said Opelka could do well: “Really keep an eye out for Reilly. His serve can give you nightmares. No one wants to play him."
Speaking to Reuters, the four-time Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters commented on Jelena Ostapenko's letdown after winning her maiden Major in the 2017 French Open: “The impact of winning something so big is very big in your life. When I look back to my path, I’m very happy that I didn’t win a Grand Slam when I was 17 or so. When you win a Grand Slam, management, sponsors and everything gets added on to that and I’m sure that can have a negative effect.”
