Decision to make Federer-Cilic final being played indoor was right - Tiley
In an interview to a local media on Saturday, the Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley recalled the past year's men's singles final when the tournament decided to close the retractable roof for the match between Roger Federer and Marin Cilic. The Swiss won in five sets and in a press conference the Croatian player complained about the organizers' choice, saying he had practised outdoor before the match while Federer had trained indoor. 'We’re absolutely comfortable with the decision. It was the right decision. I’ve spoken to both players since then ... and made very clear why we made our decision', said Tiley.
Tiley also commented on the new 2019 Australian Open heat policy. Play will be suspended on secondary courts and roof will be closed on the three stadiums when the heat scale reading reaches the 5.0. Also, players will be able to have a ten-minute break before the decisive set. Tiley referred to this year's Novak Djokovic-Gael Monfils third round when it was 39C and players still competed. 'On the (new) scale, the actions that were taken in that match would have been the same. The work that we’ve done over the last 12 months of pulling together all this data, one of the first things we did on the outcome of that data was to do an overlay of decisions that were made over the past five years. It was aligned to all the decisions we made (being) correct under this new policy', concluded Tiley.
