My opinion on Australian Open fifth set tie-break doesn't matter - Federer
At the Hopman Cup in Perth, Roger Federer revealed the Australian Open organizers asked him what he thought on possibly introducing a fifth-set tie-breaker, which they did. A few days ago Alexander Zverev said he was not consulted, but Federer shared his insight.
For the Swiss player - who has a close relationship with Tennis Australia as they are involved in the Laver Cup development - it does not make too much of a difference. 'I am okay with either one', the 37-year-old said. 'Adding the tie-breaker way back was a big deal, remember when we had 18-16, so that was a revolution when they brought the tie-breaker but we have always kept a long set in the fifth, so they asked me about it and just wondered what is my opinion. I was like "It doesn't really matter what I think, it's a tournament's decision but I am okay with any format. The funny thing is that we have four different formats in four different Grand Slams, so it's just too important to remind yourself when you do get to six all and fifth what's going on here now and do remember which is. But the thing is when you go to six all in the fifth you have had plenty of chances to win or lose it, so how it ends is secondary.'
