People call Davis Cup the Pique Cup because of Roger Federer - Blanco
Galo Blanco, the chief competition officer of Kosmos, the company behind the revamping of the Davis Cup, was asked about the Davis Cup being called as the Pique Cup. In response to Mundo Deportivo's question, Blanco said,
In September during the US Open the Swiss player said that Gerard Pique should be careful with his actions, and not make it become a competition of his own. 'That tag (of Pique Cup) was given by Federer. One could ask him why. For us, it is the Davis Cup finals," said Blanco.
Albert Costa added: 'One has to be grateful to Pique because he had the idea and he wagered on it. Yeah, he is the Kosmos President, but that's it. This is the Davis Cup.'
Blanco also spoke about the fact of setting the date in late November. Besides Federer, also Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Lucas Pouille won't play. 'It's at the same time that the Davis Cup final used to be held all this while, we have not changed it,' insisted Blanco. 'If we schedule it in September we will have other problems, as in April or February. What we want is to reach an agreement with everyone, and then speak about a date or another, if playing the final over one or two weeks or ten days, since it's a big event.'
Blanco coached Thiem in 2018 along with the Austrian player's longtime coach Gunter Bresnik. In Abu Dhabi, the world no. 8 said he was sad that his co-operation with the Spaniard had come to an end, and that he would soon look for another coach.
