Stan Wawrinka: 'Novak Djokovic will be a step ahead of us in 2019'
On Sunday ahead of the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open in Doha, Stan Wawrinka spoke about the past, present and future. Wawrinka dealt with a knee injury for a long time and in late October 2018 at the Swiss Indoors be suffered a back injury. Now he expects to do well in Doha, where he opened his run against Karen Khachanov on Tuesday with a straight sets win.
On how he spent his off-season, the 33-year-old said: "I am going out from a very big physical preparation that I did in Switzerland and Monte Carlo where I trained with Tomas Berdych and David Goffin, I found intensity, freshness and a very interesting game level. On his physical condition, the Lausanne native added: "I had never felt such well physically for a long time. My withdrawal in Basel was bad but at the same time good. I had two extra weeks on my schedule".
On his goals for the next season, Wawrinka said: "I have expectations. Without forgetting that years go on for me too... But I want to win titles again... No matter what, a 250, a 500 or bigger tournaments. 2019 has a lot of question marks, although I am convinced that Novak Djokovic if he is healthy, will be a step ahead of us. Will Rafa be injury-free? Can Roger (Federer) still win a Grand Slam titles? And Andy Murray? I am looking forward to it.'
