We don't know if Federer, Nadal, Djokovic will continue after 2019 - Costa
Albert Costa believes that fans and media should judge the new Davis Cup after 2019. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Lucas Pouille all said that they will not play the one-week final stage this year, which means already three current top 10s are sidelined. But speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Costa said: 'You do not exactly know who will be in the top 10 in November. We do not know if Federer, Rafa, Djokovic will continue if you will have a generational change because Khachanov is 11 and Coric 12 if Murray and Wawrinka will get back. At best Fognini will be a top ten by then.'
Galo Blanco commented on the decision to switch it to the best of three sets breaking the tradition of the fifth sets that featured so many historical matches in Davis Cup: 'You have more tournaments, tennis gets more physical and you have more injuries, but we helped to shorten the competition from four to two or one weeks a year. And going through from five to three sets. People say that with less sets you lose the epic, but how many people watch a full six-hour match? You have to protect the sportsman.'
Costa added: 'Many players say that this Davis Cup is better, and over the time all the tennis players will realize that before they had to play four weeks to win the Davis, and now two or one. Such an effort over the year made players tired.'
Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are all competing this week respectively at the Hopman Cup, Brisbane and Doha.
