Robin Haase: 'I will play the Davis Cup for money. It's ridiculous'

Robin Haase said he will play the Davis Cup finals from 18 to 24 November for the Netherlands, just because he will earn $150,000 as an appearance fee. Haase does not like the new format at all. "They force players to compete in the Davis Cup, I never played for money but it will play an important role, which makes me sad", said Haase as quoted by Nos.

The Dutch player added: "Like this it's ridiculous. The problem is that ITF was afraid of the ATP Cup. Then the investing management was in a rush to change the Davis Cup."

Matches will not be played at the best of five sets, but just three: "I accepted it but it doesn't mean I like it. I think, like almost all the tennis players, that the concept is too fast."

Haase also spoke about his relationship with compatriot Thiemo De Bakker: 'I was, like, two, three years already professional when he came up. But we are about the same age. It was me and Igor Sijsling, as well. Us three, we were going up the rankings together. They're both struggling mentally, physically. It's not easy. If you've been 40 in the world, you drop all the way to 600 because of injuries, then maybe you go up to 100, then you drop again because of injuries to 300. That's also the ongoing process for him. He's doing a little bit better now. But guys can play. Doesn't matter if it's a challenger or future, it's really tough out there. I think he feels that, that it's not as easy as it was for him maybe 10 years ago where he had more, I'm better than them, had that good arrogance in a way, that confidence to beat them. Now he actually sees these guys have that confidence, and he actually doesn't. So he's working on that. I will see him shortly after the US Open with Davis Cup again.'
