TIU fine David Norfeldt for $3,000 and four months after betting on tennis
Just three days after they had banned Mauricio Alvarez-Guzman for life due to match-fixing, the 20-year-old Swedish player David Norfeldt has been another competitor sanctioned by Tennis Integrity Unit after betting on tennis. David has played just six Futures matches in a career in singles back in 2016 and 2017 and he never cracked the top-1000 in singles or doubles, heading to the University of San Diego in 2017 where he played a match just a few days ago as the Toreros defeated San Diego Aztecs 4-0 on Saturday.
David admitted he placed 195 bets on tennis between April 2016 and January 2017, none of them in his matches, and after no other breaches of integrity rules associated with the offense he will serve a four-month ban with a fine of $3,000 (he was suspended for eight months and $6,000 at first place). This means Norfeldt can't compete or attend any of the events organized by the governing bodies of the sport between March 14 and July 13, 2019. As junior, David played for Sweden at the European Championship and Junior World Championship, winning a few doubles titles and reaching the top-300.
For most of the tennis fans, this has been another shot in the dark by TIU, hunting a player who played less than 15 professional matches overall (none in 2018 or 2019) instead of trying to determine the corruption on the ITF and Challenger level, with so many players involved in suspicious matches on regular basis. The relevant section of the TACP which relates to betting offenses is:
D.1.a: No Covered Person shall, directly or indirectly, wager or attempt to wager on the outcome or any other aspect of any Event or any other tennis competition.
