ATP Lyon: Tsonga ousts Lajovic. Jannik Sinner, 17, enters the main draw

The third edition of the ATP 250 event in Lyon has kicked off on Sunday and the inaugural champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga opened the campaign with a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over the 5th seed and Monte Carlo finalist Dusan Lajovic in an hour and 44 minutes. This was their third meeting and the third win for the Frenchman who saved three out of four break points and delivered two breaks to cross the finish line first and claim the 15th victory in 2019. They traded breaks in games four and five in the opening set and Tsonga took the tie break 7-4 to gain the momentum, earning a break at 3-3 in set number two and holding at 30 in game ten to book the place in the second round.

Playing on clay for the sixth week in a row, John Millman scored a rock-solid 6-1, 6-3 victory over much more experienced clay-courter Pablo Andujar in 66 minutes. Serving at 70%, the Aussie lost 13 points on serve and repelled four out of five break points to mount the pressure on the Spaniard who couldn't impose his shots in the rallies, making too many errors and dropping more than half of the points behind the initial shot to give serve away five times. Settling into a nice rhythm right from the start, John needed less than 25 minutes to secure the opening set with breaks in games two and six and hold at love at 5-1.

John had the upper hand in set number two as well, breaking Pablo three times to march towards the finish line and enter the last 16. The 22-year-old Maxime Janvier will have the opportunity to play in the main draw of the ATP tournament for the second time, beating the top seed Lloyd Harris 6-1, 6-4 in 61 minutes in the final qualifying round. Serving well, the Frenchman erased all four break points and tamed the rival's serve to break him three times and control the scoreboard all the time.

The 17-year-old Janik Sinner scored the first Masters 1000 win for 2001 generation last week in Rome and he is now the first player of his generation who qualified for the main draw at ATP event, ousting Tristan Lamasine 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 17 minutes. The youngster saved three out of four break points, doing a lot of damage with his first serve and gaining four breaks to close the match without spending too much time on the court.
