Alexander Bublik in positive spirits despite losing Newport final
Rising star Alexander Bublik was happy with his Newport campaign despite falling just short of winning it all.
The 22-year-old was beaten in the Newport final by top seed and home favorite John Isner 7-6 (2) 6-3.
Bublik missed on a golden chance to win the first set as he failed to serve out for the opener in the 12th game after earning the first break of the match a game earlier.
Bublik's game then fell apart as Isner dominated the first set tie-break and earned two breaks in the second set to claim a straight-set win.
No. 7 seed Bublik was playing in his maiden ATP final.
"I’ve worked hard for this, so I’m very happy,” Bublik said post-match, per the ATP website. “I have to try and be the best version of myself for tomorrow, so we’ll see what happens."
Bublik was showing a great mental strength throughout the week as he won four matches in three sets en route to the Newport final.
The 22-year-old is set for a new career-high ranking as he is projected to climb up to No. 71 in the world.
