AELTC reveals strategic investment in the grass-court tennis from 2020

The upcoming grass-court season in 2020 should see a lot of changes, with the AELTC making significant moves in providing the perfect ground for the events on the green surface between Roland Garros and Wimbledon. The first week will remain as it was in 2019, with the WTA events in Nottingham and 's-Hertogenbosch that will also host the ATP 250 event, together with Stuttgart that joined the grass family in 2015 when Nadal became the first champion. Week two provides the brand-new WTA Premier event in Berlin, bringing the WTA tennis to the German city for the first time since 2008 and the last edition of the German Open on clay, taking the Premier status from Birmingham who couldn't afford it anymore, serving as the flagship International tournament from 2020 after replacing Mallorca. The final week ahead of Wimbledon offers another new WTA event in Germany, in Bad Homburg, together with WTA Premier and ATP 250 event in Eastbourne, backed by the ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca that will replace Antalya in the calendar.

Philip Brook CBE, AELTC Chairman, said: "A strong and successful grass court season is absolutely critical to the future of grass-court tennis and thus the success of The Championships in the years to come. Having worked to expand the grass-court season to be a meaningful gap between Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, we are pleased to be making these significant further investments into ensuring that quality grass-court tournaments can be provided at all levels of the professional game for the best interests of the players and the broader tennis family. We thank the LTA, WTA and ATP for their support in bringing about these changes. We are pleased to be working closely with the LTA on the grass-court season in the UK, with Octagon and e|motion sports on the new WTA event in Berlin, with emotion sports on the new ATP event in Mallorca, and with Angelique Kerber Management and Perfect Match on a proposed new WTA event in Bad Homburg for which we are in the process of seeking WTA Board approval."
