'Very special night for me' - Roger Federer emotional for playing at home

Roger Federer felt emotional for playing in front of his country's crowd in Geneva, Switzerland, pairing up with Alexander Zverev on Friday. The Basel and Hamburg natives got past Jack Sock and Denis Shapovalov. The Swiss said: “All of us tennis players travel around the world for 10, 11 months of the year. There’s no place like playing at home, so this is a very special night for me. It was a great atmosphere. Sascha carried me in the second set and it was great fun out there. My back has recovered and I’m ready to go for more tomorrow", said Federer, who was far from his best physically during the US Open.

Before the Day 1, Federer had analyzed the reasons behind the line-up: "Dominic Thiem was a good choice to start this edition because he’s a veteran, he’s been at this before, he knows how to handle the nerves. Tonight, we thought Stefanos is a big-match player. He’ll enjoy the atmosphere. I think that’s why he’s going to win this.”

Team Europe's captain Bjorn Borg said: “I knew before it’s going to be a great competition. I can’t imagine this is only the first match – we started like this, with many more to come. Dominic played well and did a great effort to win this match.”
