We had no money when son Novak Djokovic was a kid, says mother
In an interview to Serbian media, Novak Djokovic's mother Diana was asked who, between her and her husband Srdjan, was stricter in educating their three children.
"Both," Diana replied. "Sometimes he, sometimes me. We always asked our kids to be well educated, smart. They could not say bad words. We were very strict in our education, and I do not think we were wrong. Today's kids are not like this. I heard parents saying their kid decides by himself. How can a four, five, ten or 15-year-old son decide? When he becomes older, he can make a call. We had a big trust in him. Jelena Gencic was the first person to tell us that she did not see such a talent since Monica Seles. But my husband wanted to hear other voices and everyone told us that Nole was an amazing talent for tennis. It was not realistic for him to be the number one, but when he started winning junior titles, I thought it was possible. When Novak turned 13, Jelena Gencic told us she could no longer coach him. At 13, we had to send him elsewhere. In the beginning, they told us to go the United States but we thought, Absolutely not! So he went to Nikola Pilic in Germany. It was tough because we had no money. I did not see him for two or three months when he went for the first time. I thought that a part of me was given away. Then you get used to him travelling. I had my other two sons but they left too so we stayed me, my husband and dog. We are happy the three are connected to each other and that this connection continued today."
