Bautista Agut: There’s been time to work on all aspects: serve, return e net game

Spanish tennis player Roberto Bautista Agut says he cannot wait to return to competition at the upcoming Western & Southern Open in New York and spoke about some of the improvements he has made during the recent lockdown.

The World no. 12 from Spain spoke to the ATP Tour website ahead of the return of the tennis circuit about how he has used the lockdown to improve different aspects of his game. "We’ve been able to work calmly on my net game. Also, [we have put] more emphasis on the physical side of things than normal because we didn’t have any tournaments in the short term. The on-court work is the most similar to normal, working in the same way as before isolation. The main difference has been that the training time before the tournament is bigger, so there’s been time to work on all aspects on court: the serve, return and the net game."

The Spaniard also said that he was looking forward to returning to competition and catching up with his peers on the tennis circuit. "All I want is to return to competition. (I have missed) many of my peers I’m with in my daily life in competition. You are often with them. We’re used to living this kind of life 80 or 90 percent of the year and of course you miss it. I’ve also missed the tournaments."

The Spaniard has a career-high ranking of No. 9 in the world and as of now, has said that he intends to play the Western & Southern Open and the US Open in New York. Many players have said that they may not play the events in New York if they are not assured of being able to return to Europe without any quarantine. The French Open is also scheduled to be held at the end of September. As of now, Rafael Nadal, Ash Barty, Nick Kyrgios, Elina Svitolina, Stan Wawrinka, Kiki Bertens have all withdrawn from the event. Roger Federer had earlier announced that he would skip the rest of the 2020 season due to a knee injury.

Bautista Agut has won nine ATP singles titles in his career and his best result at a major was a semi-final finish at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships.
