Chiara Appendino: "ATP Finals? Important moment for Italian tennis"

24 April 2019 represents a historicAL date for Italian sport. This is the day when Turin was officially indicated as the new venue for the ATP Finals, one of the most important and fascinating tournaments on the world tennis.

The Piedmontese capital has managed to beat the competition from Manchester, Tokyo, Singapore and London. The best eight tennis players of the ATP ranking will compete for the first time in Turin from 2021 and at least until 2025.

Chiara Appendino and the important goal of the ATP Finals in Turin

On the occasion of the final evening of the sixtieth edition of the Golden Racquet, the Mayor of Turin Chiara Appendino returned to express all her happiness for this incredible milestone achieved thanks to the help of the Federation, the CONI, the Government and the Municipal administration.

"What we are experiencing is an important moment for Italian tennis, with a decisive post-covid recovery and above all with the continuation of a path that brings us closer to an event of global relevance with the Finals in Turin in 2021", said Appendino in the words collected by the official website of the Italian Tennis Federation.

“I am delighted to be able to see Lorenzo Sonego play, who has recently been appointed ambassador of Turin and I am just as happy that clubs return to live their normalcy, also because they will accompany us on the journey towards November 2021.

In November of this year, however, there will be the passing of the baton between London and Turin and therefore the most visible part of the approach path will begin of what wants to be an important showcase to bring the city, in economic and visibility terms, but also to bring girls and boys closer to the world of tennis. A goal to which our tennis players in the ATP and WTA circuits are contributing concretely, thanks to the results they have achieved in recent years."

World of tennis, after the long pause linked to the health emergency, will start again from Italy. It will start in particular from Palermo, where the Palermo Ladies Open will take place.  However, new updates have come both from the WTA and from the direction of the Palermo Ladies Open. After the first major obstacle passed and the tests carried out on all the players who arrived in Italy, a tennis player was in fact hit by Covid-19.

The name of the athlete who contracted the virus is still unknown, but the latter will certainly be excluded from the tournament. Only some hours after we know that that player is Viktoriya Tomova, 25 years-olds and no.130 of the WTA ranking.
