Garbine Muguruza: I feel very sorry for Venezuela

Former World No. 1 Garbine Muguruza, who plays under the Spanish flag, says she continues to have a close relationship with Venezuela, the country where she was born and that she feels very sorry for the country as it is in the hands of incapable and incompetent people who are not able to provide good governance to its citizens.

The 2020 Australian Open runner-up recently spoke to El Tiempo in an interview in which she described her thoughts about her birth country. “It is a very complex problem from a long time ago. I suffer a lot for the Venezuelan people who have been having a hard time for so many years, suffering. And when it seems like it can't get worse, it gets worse. I believe that the country is in the hands of people incapable and incompetent to do a good job and to govern a country that has everything, wealth, good people. I feel very sorry for Venezuela."

Muguruza decided to represent Spain while playing tennis and says the decision was a long and difficult one for her. "It actually took me a long time to take it. I am and I feel very Latin. I identify a lot with the countries and it was a bit frustrating having to choose. But Spain is a country with much more tennis tradition, where my brothers were, where I was training, and the political instability of Venezuela generated some doubts. So it was a bit of fitting all those pieces together and I decided on Spain. Almost all of my family is in Venezuela. I have a close relationship and I want it to continue during my life. I feel fully identified with Venezuela and where I go I represent both countries, although only one flag can appear on television."

Garbine Muguruza has won seven singles titles in her career so far - two of those titles have come at the major events - the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. She has also won 5 doubles titles and reached the finals of the 2015 WTA Finals with countrywoman Carla Suarez Navarro. Earlier this year, she reached her fourth Grand Slam final at the Australian Open in Melbourne where she lost to American Sofia Kenin. She is currently working with former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez.
