Svetlana Kuznetsova will skip the US Open 2020!
The US Open 2020, which will be played from 31 August to 13 September at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, will face a new defection for the women's singles. In fact Svetlana Kuznetsova, winner of the American Slam in 2004 will not play the next event in Flushing Meadows due to fears related to the global pandemic of Covid-19.
The Russian has announced that she will not take part in the New York tournament due to the unfavorable situation in the States, linked to the pandemic. For this Kuznetsova will not even participate in the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, this year exceptionally at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center a week before the US Open.
"I'm sorry because I've been waiting for these tournaments, but the pandemic has changed all plans. I hope the situation in the world becomes more stable for the next competitions," said Kuznetsova. There are therefore many absences in this atypical US Open 2020, both in the women's singles and in the men's singles. Starting from world no.1 Ashleigh Barty, but also Elena Svitolina and Kiki Bertens. Among the men out the defending champion Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nick Kyrgios. The presence of Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep is still in doubt.
Rafael Nadal and the other who skip and play in New YorkWe thought that canceling the Mutua Madrid Open could change his mind. Or that the presence on the preliminary Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000 Entry List could have said something, but not, Rafael Nadal, in the end, made the most obvious decision: he will not play the US Open 2020.
The defending champion decided to renounce to the Us Open and dedicate himself to the clay court season (with the Internazionali BNL d'Italia and obviously with the Parisian Slam) without forcing the come back on hard-courts. He will be a luxury absent in New York, along with the number two of the world Roger Federer, whose cause surgery on his right knee will presumably come back to Australian Open next year, and with Gael Monfils to close this particular circle.
The US Open entry list therefore includes Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini and David Goffin, like the mainly stars of the event at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The first alternate is Andy Murray, champion of the tournament in two thousand and twelve, who obviously should have no problems entering. The Briton was also awarded a wild card by the organizers of the Western & Southern Open of Cincinnati, this year at Flushing Meadows. In the women's Entry List there are all the Top 10 except for the number one in the world Ashleigh Barty.
