Alexander Zverev: 'I was close to winning a Major at the last year's US Open'
Alexander Zverev has been the leader of the youngsters born in 1996 or later, reaching high ranking positions and securing six notable titles so far. The German made a name for himself in 2017 after winning two Masters 1000 titles and has been ranked inside the top-10 for respectable four years. At 24, Zverev has secured the ATP Finals, four Masters 1000 titles and the Olympic Games gold medal, only missing a Major crown to complete his rich collection. With 12 notable finals and six trophies, Alexander is among the most successful players in the last couple of years, seeking more good results in the years to come and crowns on the most significant scene that motivates him a lot. Zverev has won one Masters 1000 title so far in 2021, with another chance coming in Cincinnati against Andrey Rublev on Sunday.
Alexander Zverev would love to win a Major title as soon as possible. At the last year's US Open, Alexander had a massive two sets to love advantage and served for the trophy against Dominic Thiem, only to experience a 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 loss after four hours and two minutes. Zverev had the victory in his hands, taking the opening two sets and serving for the title at 5-3 in the decider, squandering all that to finish runner-up in his first Major final. Thiem grabbed four points more, and they stayed neck and neck in both the shortest and more advanced exchanges for a memorable tennis clash. The German had more winners and unforced errors, scoring eight breaks from 18 opportunities and giving serve away seven times from 13 chances offered to the Austrian, who kept his focus in the closing stages to become a Major champion at 27.
"People tend to forget quickly in our sport. If you win something, you have to put that aside and start chasing new crowns. I love the feeling of lifting the trophy; that's the hunger that you want. Winning a big match or title gives me satisfaction. That's what you play for and what draws the biggest emotion. I'm happy with my path right now. I'm satisfied with my 2020 despite not winning a big title. I was very close at the US Open. For me now is about making the next step and winning a notable title," Alexander Zverev said.
