Andy Murray reveals the 'strangest situation' he has ever been in on Tour

Former world No. 1 Andy Murray described what happened the other night at the Winston-Salem Open as the "strangest situation I have ever been in before a match." 

Just before the start of his first round match versus Nick Kyrgios, the Australian pulled out of the tournament. 

The qualifying matches were just finishing in Winston-Salem as the Murray and Kyrgios clash was scheduled for Sunday. 

The Winston-Salem organizers had to react quick and find a replacement for Kyrgios. 

Rubin, who lost his qualifying final match around 25 minutes before the Kyrgios withdrawal, was offered a lucky loser spot and accepted. 

Around an hour later, Rubin returned to the court and suffered a 6-2 6-0 loss to Murray. 

"I mean, it is probably -- It is by far the strangest situation I have ever been in before a match on tour," Murray admitted. 

"Pretty rare that you experience something new when you are 17 years into your career. 

Murray acknowledged Rubin wasn't in a good place physically 

"I didn't know that he went to college here, that he went to university here, so, yeah, I'm sure that would have been a nice moment for him playing in front of that crowd at the uni he went to. Physically, he just wasn't in a good place," Murray acknowledged. 

The two players were all tied at two games apiece after the opening four games but Murray then won 10 consecutive games to finish the match in stly.e 

"Yeah, it was unfortunate because I dont know when he was cramping or when he started cramping," Murray noted. 

“It’s a bit tricky but obviously after the first few games I started to get a bit more comfortable and then towards then end he was struggling a bit,” Murray said of the 58-minute win. “Unfortunately I know he’s from here and that’s great. It was a nice atmosphere to play in and everything but my job is to try to win the match.”
