Ashleigh Barty shares kind message to Jil Teichmann following Cincinnati final win
World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty shared a kind message to Swiss Jil Teichmann following the Cincinnati Masters final.
Barty, seeded at No. 1, saw off wild card Teichmann 6-3 6-1 to win her fifth title of the season.
Barty had no problems against Teichmann but she showed her humble side after the final, immediately giving credit to the Swiss for the week she had.
Teichmann clinched a few big wins in Cincinnati, surprising Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova.
Unfortunately for Teichmann, she had no answer for Barty's game in Sunday's final.
"To Jil, what a week, mate. This is your level, this is where you belong," Barty said, per WTA Insider.
Teichmann recalled meeting Roger FedererSince Teichmann is from Switzerland, there was no way she would avoid a Federer-related question.
Teichmann was asked if she had any experiences with Federer and she recalled meeting the former world No. 1 at the 2018 US Open.
"Yeah. I actually have had a funny moment. It was in US Open. I'm not sure if, I think 2018, I'm not sure. I was playing last round of qualifying," Teichmann recalled.
"I was actually set on first round. I was walking out of the locker room, and there is this really small hallway. He was coming the other way, I'm not kidding, with three, four or five cameras. I'm, like, I'm not going to disturb, so I just went on one side.
"In the moment of crossing, he's, like, 'Good luck,' in Swiss-German. I was so in shock. I didn't answer in that moment. I was, like, Oh, my God. Did he really just say that?
"I was waiting next to Patty Schnyder. She was also playing last round of qualifying that year. I told her, like, Patty, this happened. She's like, Relax, it's okay.
"Then he walked again, and he said again 'Good luck' to both of us. I looked at her, Now it's impossible. Did I lose? And I actually qualified that year."
