Nick Kyrgios vows to put on a show at US Open and Laver Cup
Former world No. 13 Nick Kyrgios has confirmed that he plans to play at the US Open and Laver Cup.
Kyrgios, now ranked at No. 85 in the world, had been expected to play at this week's Winston-Salem Open but he pulled out of the tournament minutes before his first round match due to a knee injury.
Kyrgios, a six-time ATP champion, drew three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray in the Winston-Salem first round and the match had been expected to highlight first round action.
Unfortunately for fans and everyone involved, the highly-anticipated match between Kyrgios and Murray never happened.
"My tennis family. I know there are ups and downs, those who struggle with me, those who get frustrated with me, those who hope for the best and those who dislike me. I want you to know that I will see you at US Open & Laver Cup. I’ll do my best to put on a show and hopefully be able to make all of you happy. I’m at peace," Kyrgios said in an Instagram post.
Kyrgios last played at the Toronto MastersTwo weeks ago, Kyrgios was up by a set before Reilly Opelka created a comeback to beat the Australian in three sets in the Toronto first round.
During the key moments of the second set tie-break, Opelka appeared to touch the net but chair umpire remained silent and the American ended up winning the set.
"What are you watching? I saw his foot touch the net and you're not going to call it," Kyrgios said to the umpire. "What else could you be watching, bro? I can see his foot touch the net from where I am, and you don't call anything. It's a joke, bro. It cost me the f---ing set. Bulls---."
After the match, Eugenie Bouchard said tennis needs a bad guy like Kyrgios.
"I don’t think Reilly Opelka touched the net. Nick Kyrgios was just finding and picking things to get angry on. But it’s still entertaining. I’m still a fan. I think tennis needs a bad guy like Nick," Bouchard said on Tennis Channel.
