2017 Melbourne win over Nadal is Roger Federer's best win, says Luthi
Many people still remember Roger Federer's epic five-set win over Rafael Nadal in the 2017 Australian Open, including obviously the Swiss player's coach Severin Luthi. Le Matin asked Luthi which was the best match played by Federer since when they started working together in 2007. 'It's impossible to pick', Luthi said. 'We definitely think about 2017 Melbourne. The run was unexpected. It was a final and against Rafa (Nadal); all of this reinforces the dimension of the match. But the context can also influence. The French Open semis win against Djokovic (in 2011), who was coming from an impressive streak of wins. These are two memorable wins. But the time factor plays a role: opponents evolve, even Roger's game. So, how can you say what his "best tennis" is? Rafa is much more aggressive than ten years ago. It gives more beautiful rallies. But are they doing better? We cannot tell that.'
Asked if it may be the last appearance ever at the ATP Finals for Federer, Luthi added: 'Nope. Although I am well aware of his approach to the end of a career, I cannot imagine that it's the last one. In my mind, I think that he will still be in action in 2019. And we will see for 2020.'
Luthi also said: This week I especially want Roger to play well. Having said that, you cannot really appreciate the moment. It's not easy when one goal follows the other one. Take the 2017 Australian Open final. We celebrate the whole night and the day after I was on the plane for Alabama (Davis Cup). I had some flashbacks during the week, but the following tie was there, ahead of us.'
