ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic trails 83 weeks at the top to Roger Federer

With just two Challenger events in the week behind us, we could trace only small changes in the Top 70 positions of the ATP rankings, and none in the Top 30. We will have to wait for January in order to see the first shifts in the rankings and no matter what happens Novak Djokovic is safe on the ATP throne, standing 1565 points clear of Rafael Nadal and having just over 1000 points to defend before June 2019! In addition, Novak is spending his 227th week as the world number 1 and he now trails 83 weeks behind Roger Federer, hoping to reduce that deficit in 2019 and attack Federer's record of 310 weeks at the top in 2020 or 2021 if he stays healthy and on the current level.

Rafael Nadal is 1000 points clear of Roger Federer and he targets Abu Dhabi and Brisbane as the starting points of his 2019 campaign, looking to leave a nasty knee injury behind him and continue where he left at the US Open where he was a title contender. At the age of 37, Roger Federer is more than thrilled to wrap up another season in the Top 3 behind his greatest rivals, especially after winning his 20th Major crown and the fact he was ranked as the world number 1 for a few weeks to earn more ranking records.

For the second year in a row, Alexander Zverev is the year-end number 4 and he is the sixth-youngest player in the Open era who achieved that after the names like Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The remaining players in the Top 10 are Juan Martin del Potro, Kevin Anderson, Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem, Kei Nishikori and John Isner, with seven 30&over players in the elite group after just three we had 12 months ago. Roger Federer, Feliciano Lopez, Fernando Verdasco and Philipp Kohlschreiber are the oldest players in the Top 100 (Ivo Karlovic will join them in the last week of the season) and there are more than 30 players who turned 30 in the Top 100, something we have never seen before.

On the other hand, there are also 11 U21 players after a stellar season for the young guns, especially for Zverev, Tsitsipas, Shapovalov, De Minaur and Tiafoe who are all ranked in the Top 40, looking for much more in the season ahead of us. Year-end Top 20 rankings list:
