Thanasi Kokkinakis: 2018 was big step forward, I just need to stay healthy

Rising Australian tennis star Thanasi Kokkinakis was happy with his 2018 campaign.

The 22-year-old managed to stay healthy and avoid serious injuries this past season.

World No. 151 Kokkinakis' main goal for 2018 was to stay healthy as he missed almost the entire 2016 season and the majority of 2017 season through various injuries.

Kokkinakis, who achieved his career-high ranking of No. 69 in 2015, clinched his career-best win this past March when he stunned Swiss Roger Federer in the Miami Masters second round.

"This year was a big step forward," Kokkinakis said.

"I was able to play a lot more matches and had the biggest win of my career.

"My tennis has definitely improved since I was at my career high a few years ago - I just need to stay healthy and stay on the court."

Kokkinakis is due to open his 2019 campaign in the opening week of the season at the Brisbane International.

The 22-year-old hasn't yet been granted a wildcard into the Australian Open.

Kokkinakis skipped this week's Australian Open 2019 Wildcard Play-off.

However, the 2013 Australian Open boys' singles runner-up remains a strong candidate to receive an Australian Open wildcard and make his fourth main draw appearance at Melbourne Park.

"I will be in (the Australian Open) qualles if that's what it needs to be," Kokkinakis underlined.
