Australia's Jordan Thompson: It is never easy in your home slam
Australia's Jordan Thompson is happy to have made a positive start to his Australian Open campaign as he insists that it is never to play at your home slam.
The Australian handed a straight-set defeat to former world No. 12 Feliciano Lopez 6-1 7-6 (0) 6-3 on Monday.
Thompson made the Sydney International quarter-final last week, which caused him not to get many hours on the practice courts at Melbourne Park before the Australian Open.
Yet, the 24-year-old made an easy job of Lopez to claim just his fourth Grand Slam win in 18 attempts.
Thompson, ranked at No. 72 in the world, is playing is making his sixth consecutive main draw appearance at Melbourne Park.
In his previous five appearances, he once made the second round and four times lost in the first round respectively.
"It'a great start. It's never easy in your home slam," Thompson said post-match, per the AAP and Tennis Australia.
"I hadn't been here too many days coming from Sydney and hadn't had too many hits on the court. But I played solid."
Thompson struggled with his confidence at the end of the last season but restored it by winning back-to-back Challenger titles in Canberra and Traralgon.
"It gave me plenty of match fitness. To win matches back-to-back … it restored confidence," Thompson admitted.
"It:s getting better every match I think. Whether I win or lose, I feel more comfortable on the court."
Thompson is set to clash next against Andreas Seppi as he hopes to make the third round at Melbourne Park for the first time in his career.
