Brisbane's John Millman ready for Grigor Dimitrov challenge

Australian tennis star John Millman won't be backing down on the court when he meets Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov in the Brisbane International round-of-16.

Millman, 29, survived a tricky Brisbane opener as he beat American Tennys Sandgren 7-6 (6) 6-7 (6) 6-0.

Meanwhile, 2017 Brisbane champion Dimitrov made a good start to his campaign as he saw off Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3 6-4.

World No. 19 Dimitrov leads the head-to-head against world No. 38 Millman 1-0.

Their lone meeting came at the Brisbane International exactly a year ago.

Back then, the Bulgarian edged out home-favourite Millman in the round-of-16 after saving two match points 4-6 7-6 (8) 6-3.

"I think that's the type of match you want, the one I had today. I could test my body and come through it really well," Millman said after beating Sandgren, per the Brisbane International website.

"[Grigor’s] a great player, he's a shot-maker. He's going to really take it to me. Now it's about improving. Hopefully, I can really take it to him.

"I'm looking forward to it. These are the ones you want to play, you want to test yourself against the ones I see as some of the best players in the world and what better place to do it in the world than Brissy."

Millman, who was born in Brisbane, is playing in front of his home fans, family and good friends this week.

"I grew up just down the road. The sign of a good supporter is not someone who just rides the highs with you but also the lows and there are plenty of people littered through this stadium tonight who've been there all the way," Millman said.
