I got used to be surprised by Rafael Nadal's comebacks, says Uncle Toni
In a column for El Pais, Rafael Nadal's uncle, Toni, recalled some of the injuries that his nephew went through in his career. The most recent one is dated back to November when he underwent foot surgery. Nadal reached the Australian Open quarter-finals winning all the 12 sets played so far. 'Rafael's comeback at the Australian Open, after a four-month absence, cameback to open doubts about how he would perform', wrote Toni.
'In 2005, Rafael suffered what has been, without any doubt, his most painful and worrying injury out of his whole career, a problem on the left foot and that has always been his Damocles' obstacle. It came at the Madrid Open, that was played on the hard court at the time in October, and for the first time, we went through doubtful and very worrying months. At the time he came back after three months, in early 2006, in the Marseille tournament where he still reached the semifinals. We could not predict what his reaction, not only physically but also mental and technique-wise, would have been as the situation was unknown to us. The following tournament was in Dubai and Rafael not only reached the final but also beat Roger Federer on hard, in a time where the Swiss was the untouchable number one. I remember my surprise in seeing the quickness with which my nephew recovered his best level. This surprise, if I did not know it so much, would have been with me after each of his injury that happened in his career. And the one of this year made no exception.'
