'Win over Roger Federer was Stefanos Tsitsipas's turning point' - Coach

In an interview to Tennis Channel, Serena Williams's coach Patrick Mouratoglou commented on Stefanos Tsitsipas's potential. The Greek reached his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open losing to Rafael Nadal. "His first quality is to be a great competitor, I know him since 2015 when we started to work with me at the academy and I have always been impressed by that and that's the reason why he is going so fast, why he is raising in the rankings so fast", said Mouratoglou. "This match against Roger (Federer) was definitely a turning point in his career because it means so much for anyone to beat this incredible champion. I like that he was able to win the match after this one which was really difficult, a tough match against a very tough opponent and he became the favourite suddenly and he could manage to win this one. Heading into the match with Rafa, he was confident that he could win it but what Rafa proposed this day was just too high. I saw Stefanos this morning, it's tough and I like that it's tough for him. I like that he is so disappointed."

Naomi Osaka's win over Petra Kvitova in the Australian Open final came as no surprise for Mouratoglou, who had just predicted that the Japanese would win in three sets, which she did. "For both, this is probably the most important of their career. Kvitova, because she never won a Grand Slam outside of Wimbledon and because of what she's been through. Osaka's been so composed after the win at the US Open. To be able to handle that and continue to win only gives her confidence. Petra can obviously win, but I doubt she will be at her best considering the circumstances."
