WTA Rankings: Naomi Osaka becomes the new world No. 1
The respective Australian Open champion and finalist Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova lead the WTA Rankings after the Grand Slam in Melbourne. The Japanese hold two Majors, also the US Open, and Indian Wells title, while Kvitova equalled her career-high ranking. Simona Halep dropped from the first to the third place, having lost to Serena Williams in the fourth round as a defending finalist. Williams got closer to the top 10 again, being eleventh. Caroline Wozniacki, who did not retain her maiden Major title losing to Maria Sharapova in the third round, is now ninth. Sloane Stephens is fourth, followed by Karolina Pliskova, who reached the semifinals, and Angelique Kerber.
On how she is shy with the public, Osaka said: "I would love to be better at talking. In the first place, I don't even talk normally, like, in my day-to-day. I might speak, like, 10 sentences. Honestly, I wouldn't really be that thrilled if I had to practice talking."
Williams believes that her straight-set 2017 Australian Open final win over her sister Venus was the greatest in her career. In an on-court during the Australian Open early rounds, the American said: "I think the last time I was here I was actually pregnant and playing at the same time. It was weird walking out here on my own this time. It is great to be back. That was literally the greatest win of my career."
