Defending champion Juan Martin del Potro withdraws from Acapulco

World No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro has withdrawn from the Abierto Mexicano Telcel as his knee isn't ready for back-to-back tournaments.

The top-seeded Argentinian suffered a Delray Beach Open quarter-final loss on Friday as rising American star Mackenzie McDonald won a tight contest 6-4 3-6 7-6 (5).

The 30-year-old's knee clearly bothered him throughout the match but the 2011 Delray Beach champion didn't go down without a big fight.

Del Potro, who fractured his kneecap during a heavy fall at the Rolex Shanghai Masters in October, made his return to competitive tennis on the hard courts of Delray Beach this week.

Earlier this week, defending champion del Potro accepted a wildcard into the ATP 500 event in Acapulco.

Del Potro hopes to return to competitive action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, which kicks off on March 07.

"It's really difficult to win the match playing like this. I couldn't run 100-percent. Now I have to take a break a little bit longer to be ready for Indian Wells," del Potro said after losing to McDonald, per John Horn.

"The doctor says if I want to be 100 percent it will need time. But I don't want to be at home anymore watching the tournaments on TV because I had this in the past and it was really bad to me. But in this condition it's not easy to play my best level."
