Dominic Thiem speaks highly of Rio Open, says he is getting better
Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem has nothing but good to say of the Rio Open and the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The 25-year-old is set to make his fourth consecutive appearance at the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro.
Thiem has had success so far in his career on the clay of Rio de Janeiro, having won it all at the tournament in 2017.
In the remaining two appearances, the Austrian made the Rio de Janeiro semi-final in 2016 and the quarter-final in 2018 respectively.
"This tournament has always treated me well. I like the conditions, the crowd is great," Thiem said, per Rio Open Twitter.
"The city has a great energy and I love coming here and doing these activities."
Thiem, seeded at No. 1, has been drawn to open his Rio de Janeiro campaign against world No. 90 Laslo Djere.
"I know Djere from juniors and I have practiced with him. But I've never faced him so I am looking for the match tomorrow," Thiem said of his upcoming match against Djere.
Thiem suffered a first-round exit at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha, before he was forced to retire his Australian Open second round clash due to fatigue.
The Austrian returned to competitive action at last week's Argentina Open, where he made the singles semi-final and ended runner-up with Diego Schwartzman in the doubles event.
"I had some issues in the beginning of the season and now I'm getting better," Thiem claimed.
