Jo Wilfried Tsonga, Pierre-Hugues Herbert reflect on Montpellier final
French tennis star Jo Wilfried Tsonga was in great spirits after winning it all at the Open Sud de France.
The 33-year-old beat fellow compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the Montpellier final 6-4 6-2.
The turning point of the match was when Tsonga won five games in a row to take a 6-4 2-0 lead.
It was Tsonga's 17th ATP title and the first one since the fall of 2017.
A knee injury forced Tsonga to miss a good part of the 2018 season.
"I am very happy with the way I played this week. It was an amazing moment for me to win here in Montpellier," Tsonga said post-match, per Xtreme Tennis News.
"I have made many efforts to come back, so for me it is a good reward and I hope I will be able to continue playing at this level."
Herbert, 27, once again fell just short of winning his maiden ATP title.
Herbert has now lost three singles ATP Finals so far in his career.
Herbert stunned Denis Shapovalov and Tomas Berdych on his way to reaching the Montpellier final but had no answer for former world No. 5 Tsonga.
"It was a tough match against Jo. I knew it was going to be a hard match and he was all over me for the whole final. He was just the better player today. I am happy about my week, I played five matches at a high level and I am looking forward to the rest of season. [I will] try to keep up the good work," Herbert said.
