Norman praises Switzerland: 'You have Roger Federer, Wawrinka, Bencic'
The former world No. 2 Magnus Norman recalled when he split with Stan Wawrinka at the end of 2017 in order to spend more time with his family. The Swede was not the only coach to have taken such a big decision as Darren Cahill also split with Simona Halep because of the same reason. But Norman got back on the road a few months after in April 2018. "It was a very, very difficult time for me. I do not know if you can imagine how it feels like for a father when one of your daughters gets disappointed and she gets far away from you. I knew that it was a bad time for me to split with Stan. But I did it for my girls", Norman admitted speaking to NZZ.
He still sees positives: "I have the best job in the world. Now I enjoy my life on tour more than what I did as a player. Having somebody who looks for advice and trusts you is amazing."
Norman also has his "Good to Great" academy, but he does not want to work full time there. "It's not the same thing. I need the intensity of the tournaments."
Asked if other players offered Norman to work together when he stopped working with Wawrinka, he replied: "There were contacts. But I split with Stan to have more time with my family. Starting to work with another player was not an option."
People always say that Switzerland is less good than Sweden as they always lose against them in football and other sports. Can Norman perceive the differences? "Oh, what? Sweden has not Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Belinda Bencic. As I perceive it, Swiss and Swede guys are similar enough. We have similar social issues, a bad lifestyle, obesity. We are similar and so we understand each other well."
