Reaching Margaret Court's record may be hard for Serena Williams - Jo Durie
In an interview to Express the former world No. 5 Jo Durie was asked if she thinks that Serena Williams will catch and eventually overtake Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slam titles record. “I don’t know, I think that is a great question mark that we are all so eager to see whether she can do it or not. But I think the standard of women’s tennis has risen dramatically over the last few years and she might find it very hard to do it. She has got the tennis it’s just if she can win the seven matches that’s needed", said Durie.
Serena lost to Karolina Pliskova in the Australian Open quarter-finals last month, and to Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osaka in the Wimbledon and US Open finals respectively. “At 37 she is still eager and she is trying to get that 24th Grand Slam", added Durie. "I think she played Karolina Pliskova in the Australian Open quarter-final and maybe just ran out of steam a little bit. Women’s tennis is in such a good place at the minute."
On Johanna Konta, Durie said: "When she got to the last four at Wimbledon, she found herself at No 4 in the world and appeared to be on the brink of establishing herself as one of the best players in the world, but she admitted she hit a brick wall with her energy and emotions. She puts so much into her tennis and getting to that level left her drained. She lost her way for a bit and I understand that. This happens to a lot of top sports people who make a breakthrough and then struggle to sustain it because the effort of getting there is so intense. Being successful is fabulous, but it’s very different from what you have been used to up to that point. You tend to lose a lot of matches when you first come onto the main tour and it takes a lot out of you winning lots of matches week after week. After a dip in form and fortunes, it is always hard to get back to the levels you achieved when you had your best days".
