Regaining tennis momentum will be challenging for Jack Sock this season

It would appear that Jack Sock has fallen on a series of bad luck in the injury department since his upheaval at helping Mike Bryan by partnering in doubles. Bob Bryan had to undergo hip surgery and Sock willfully served as a substitute. The new pair of Bryan and Sock had success at doubles earning titles at: Indian Wells, Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the ATP Finals. Sock's singles level had lackluster activity falling in rank at what used to be the top 10 to now at the top 100s.

The Nebraskan native had to take a hiatus because of his own health issues. When most players had finished off the Australian Open, some going to sunny islands to relax until the next tournament, Jack Sock took to the slopes for a bit of snowboarding. He'd take a tumble and injured his index finger. He will be out for about two months recovering from surgery on his damaged ligaments. It also gives him time to think about other strategies on improving his singles play which has drop dramatically in ranking and tactics.

Sock has had company when it comes to hand surgery with Petra Kvitova having undergone hours to attach tendons and nerves cut during a home invasion burglary. She came back on tour four months later to play the 2017 French Open and winning the first round. It was a few weeks later she'd win the Aegon Classic title and to date has won several more titles to her credit. It was also in 2017 that the Swiss player Timea Bacsinszky has had a nagging hand ailment for over a year. She'd communicated on social media that "...treatment I have been undertaking for the last months hasn't been enough to cure the pain in my hand...I have decided to end my 2017 season..." She had surgery and returned on tour months later to defeat five top 20 players.

Besides from Sock's current hand injury, he still has hip ailments which flared up during the Hopman Cup event last month. Sock had to retire in the second set with Japan's Yuichi Sugita. Later he and CoCo Vandeweghe lost the first set and he had a medical time out after falling earlier.

Hopefully Jack Sock will recuperate well and return just as determined as before his injury. He will have a greater focus on his return of elevating his singles performances and to perhaps find a partner for his doubles play of which he can continue to have consistent victories.
