Richard Gasquet: "I did not walk for a week after undergoing surgery"

In an interview to Midi Libre at the Montpellier Open, Richard Gasquet commented on his hip surgery he went through a few weeks ago. The Frenchman will skip the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and probably the Miami Open as well, and he hopes to return in the clay-court season in Monte Carlo. But there are no guarantees for Gasquet.

"After the operation, I did not walk for a week", he said. "I felt a lot of pain and I had a big scar. Then I started rehabilitation with walking and cycling. It's a long process. I needed surgery, I had no choice, I had pain in everyday life. I have not set a date to come back. It's a real challenge to return after surgery but the muscles have not been affected. In principle, there are no after-effects. But recovery takes a long time. For now, I am on track. My team and I try to make sure it goes as quickly as possible by healing in the best possible way. It's strange for me not to play Montpellier this year after six finals in a row but I hope to play next year. I may visit Montpellier again tomorrow and I will then go back to Paris to continue rehabilitation."
