ATP Barcelona: Rafael Nadal seeks 12th title, what a stunning field!

The 67th edition of the Barcelona Open that will take place from 20th to 28th of April has been announced on Tuesday. Obviously, the 11-time tournament champion Rafael Nadal will be the ultimate favourite. This year on clay the Spaniard will also play at Monte Carlo, Rome and French Open, while he is set to skip Madrid in order to recharge batteries. Nadal features as defending champion having defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in a straight-set final last year. Barcelona will be just one of the many tournaments on Tsitsipas's schedule during the first half of the year, which raised some funny criticism from Naomi Osaka in a press conference in Indian Wells.

In Barcelona a lot of world-class players will compete, including the 2017 finalist Dominic Thiem, the 2014 and 2015 champion Kei Nishikori, Lucas Pouille and Karen Khachanov. The 18-year-old Canadian Felix-Auger Aliassime and the 2010 event winner Fernando Verdasco will try to go far as well. For the first time in three years Fabio Fognini committed, in 2015 here he defeated Nadal in the quarter-finals. Since 2005, Nadal only skipped one edition, 2010, due to a knee injury. David Ferrer will get a main draw wild card invitation, he will end his career in May in Madrid. Barcelona will definitely be one of the most special tournaments for him having reached four finals.
