Caroline Garcia: Victoria Azarenka is a great player
Caroline Garcia outplayed former Champion Victoria Azarenka in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to move into the Third Round of the Miami Open.
The match was a closely contested affair with both players hitting form in patches throughout. Taking a 5-0 lead in the first set, Garcia let Azarenka fight back, eventually making the most of the break she had. The Frenchwoman got the all important break in the 7th game of the second set which she capitalized on to wrap the match in straight sets.
"You don’t really have a choice against someone like Azarenka," Garcia said.
"Maybe she’s not playing as she was when she was No.1, but she’s a great player. I saw the match when she played against Serena [Williams] in Indian Wells, it was a very impressive match from both of them.”
"I have to play my best, and that’s what I’m trying to do when I play against her. It was a two-set match each time, but it was really tight, I think. It was just turning around a few points."
Yet to cross the Third Round in Miami, she next faces German Julia Goerges, who she has beaten in the previous 2 meetings. "She’s a powerful player," Garcia said. "She has a big serve, big forehand especially. She can just put you like three meters out of the ball. It’s a challenge to always play against her, trying to win her serve, trying to always put her serve back. It’s a challenge -- and I like it."
