Gael Monfils withdraws from Miami Masters
French tennis star Gael Monfils has withdrawn from the Miami Masters.
The Frenchman, seeded at No. 16, had a first round bye in Miami.
World No. 18 Monfils was scheduled to open his Miami campaign on Friday against Dutch Robin Haase.
The withdrawal means that the 32-year-old is set to miss the Miami event for a third year in a row.
Monfils has played at the Miami event nine times so far in his career.
The Frenchman's career-best result in Miami came in 2016, when he made the quarter-final before losing to Japan's Kei Nishikori.
Former world No. 6 Monfils last played at the Indian Wells Masters.
The 32-year-old's promising Indian Wells campaign came to an end on an unfortunate way as he shockingly announced his withdrawal from his quarter-final match just minutes before the start of the match.
Eventual champion Dominic Thiem received a free pass into the Indian Wells semi-final as the Frenchman was forced to pull out due to Achilles tendon problem.
The injury setback came at a bad time for in-form Monfils, who won it all at Rotterdam last month, as well as made the semi-finals in Sofia and Dubai.
It remains to be seen will Monfils be forced to miss any of the upcoming clay-court events.
Meanwhile, the Frenchman will be replaced in the Miami main draw by rising South-African star Lloyd Harris.
