Johanna Konta embraces busy June schedule on grass ahead of Wimbledon

The world no. 38 and the top-ranked British player on the WTA list Johanna Konta has announced a full home grass swing in June, entering Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne ahead of the third Grand Slam of the season at Wimbledon. Ever since she joined the WTA Tour in 2012, Johanna had played almost every pre-Wimbledon tournament in Great Britain, reaching the quarter-final in Nottingham and Eastbourne in 2015, moving one step further 12 months later when she advanced into the semis in Eastbourne, beating Petra Kvitova and losing to Karolina Pliskova in three sets to miss the title match.

2017 was her best season on the Tour and she shined on the green surface, losing to Donna Vekic in the final of Nottingham and giving a walkover to Karolina Pliskova in the semi-final in Eastbourne. That was only the beginning, though, with Konta scoring five wins at Wimbledon to book the place in the last four where Venus Williams ended her amazing run after prevailing over Simona Halep in the previous round. Last year, Johanna competed in another final in Nottingham, ousted by Ashleigh Barty in three sets and wasting another opportunity to lift the trophy in front of the home crowd. Three new chances will come this June and the Briton is hoping for a better run in comparison to what she has shown so far in 2019.

“I’m excited to be returning to play these fantastic tournaments this summer. The grass court season is one of my favorites and nothing compares to competing at home with passionate fans, friends and family, who are behind you all the way. There is always a strong player field in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne with no easy matches. I hope the fans come out to support the other players and me all the way. These tournaments also provide me with the perfect pathway to Wimbledon,” said Konta.
