Matthew Romios: It's exciting to be in my first singles final at this level
Matthew Romios booked a place in his maiden Australian Pro Tour final after his opponent was forced to bow out of the match for a second match running, giving the 19 year old enough time to brace himself for the finals.
In his semi-finals clash, Romios took on fellow teen Alexander Crnokrak, who was forced to retire early in the second set.
“You can’t pick and choose how you win, you just take it how it goes, I guess,” Romios, 19, said. “I felt like I came in and started strong, finding the middle of the racquet early. I was playing really good tennis, it was just unfortunate that he injured himself – otherwise it would have been a great match I think.”
“I’m into my first singles final at this level, it’s exciting," he further added, not hiding his emotions and excitement about reaching the finals for the first time.
Romios will face top seed Brydan Klein in the final, who is yet to drop a set this week and will be a great test for the young Australian.
“He’s playing at a pretty good level at the moment, but if I go out there and just back my game, it could be a close one I think,” Romios said. “I usually handle these things pretty well, I just take every match the same. I just go out there and play my game. It’s working at the moment, so let’s just see what happens.”
