Nick Kyrgios reflects on receiving verbal obscenity point penalty

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has revealed what led to him firing back at a heckler during his Miami Masters round-of-16 clash against Croatian Borna Coric.

The Australian was 30-40 down on his serve in the seventh game of the third set and missed the first serve before he cussed out a heckler.

The 23-year-old then automatically lost the game after receiving a verbal obsenity point penalty.

"They payed money to see me play and they just screamed out ridiculous things, and I'm just not going to take it anymore," Kyrgios said post-match of his verbal obscenity point penalty, per Ben Rothenberg.

"I played for two hours and 20 minutes, and the guy yells at me 'Play some tennis!' I'm not going to take it, so I just said F you to him. Probably not needed, but at that time I'd been competing and in the heat of the moment, and it's not what you want to hear."

Kyrgios, seeded at No. 27, eventually lost 4-6 6-3 6-2 to No. 11 seed Coric.

The Australian recovered from an early break down in the first set to win the opener.

One break of serve in the second set was enough for the Croatian to force a decider.

The Croatian was 2-1 down after the opening three games of the third set but then won five games in a row to seal the win in style.

Coric will fight for a Miami semi-final spot against rising Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime.
