Roger Federer: I like the Next Gen. Tsitsipas has impressed me
At the Miami Open, Roger Federer spoke about the Next Generation players. The Swiss player mentioned several names praising them all. "I can't count anybody out, it's a great group, I really enjoy watching them now and also playing against them and of course Stefanos Tsitsipas has impressed me by beating me at the Australian Open," said the 37-year-old Basel native.
"I thought he played really tremendous tennis over four sets, he brought it in every single point and that was impressive. Felix Auger-Aliassime doing it the last two weeks has been unbelievable, he came to Dubai to train with me in the off-season and I know him quite well and to see him taking that next step is phenomenal. Daniil Medvedev, I have played him twice last year in Shanghai and then he was very tired in Basel, that I do not count, he finished super late and played a lot of tennis. And then I like the game of Denis Shapovalov, he is a great shot maker, he can take the racket out of anybody's hand, and he is a great player. Then there is also all the other guys who have something very special so I like the Next Gen."
On the courts' speed, Federer added: "People were saying it's very slow but I hit a lot of aces today again and I did also feel some of the slices that it does get a little bit so it's the humidity and compared to Indian Wells where the ball bounces and flies here it just doesn't do as much so that's why a lot of players maybe get the feeling that's it's much slower but I think a little bit quicker is nicer because then the really good shots really get rewarded."
Federer is set to play a youngster in Daniil Medvedev in the pre-quarter-final on Wednesday.
