Sania Mirza: I’m very satisfied with what I have achieved
Six-time Grand Slam champion Sania Mirza is on another comeback trail, this time after the birth of her son.
Back in training, Mirza spoke about her comeback and the mind space she is in. “Very satisfied with what I have achieved. Of course, there is bound to be the stray niggle about missing out on an important title, but that is part of every sportsperson’s life. It will be a bonus for me to achieve anything more,” she said.
Speaking about challenges ahead for her, the 32 year old commented, “As an Indian woman tennis player, I again find myself in uncharted territory, trying to fight my way back to the top after becoming a mother. I still have a long way to go before I can begin to compete.”
She is looking forward to being back on court by August this year and shed some light on her focus areas in training. “I have had to reduce considerable extra weight. Then there is muscle strengthening apart from regaining stamina and speed.”
A lot has changed since she took a break from tennis with player standards improving. “It is difficult for me to assess as I have not been on the circuit for over 18 months. I hear new names and I’m sure the level has gone up as the competition keeps getting more and more intense,” she said.
Speaking about her thoughts on her comeback, Mirza ended by saying, “I am giving it everything I have. It is difficult to make predictions. I may or may not get back to the highest level, but I do not want to regret when I retire that I did not give it my best shot.”
