ATP Monte Carlo: Zverev brothers lose close battle
Germany's Alexander Zverev and Mischa Zverev have concluded their Monte Carlo Masters doubles campaign after a round-of-16 loss suffered to Robin Haase and Wesley Koolhof.
Haase and Koolhof lost a tight first set but kept their focus as they claimed a 6-7 (8) 6-4 10-8 win over the Zverev brothers.
The first set went into a tie-break after the Zverevs saved a total of five break points, while Haase and Koolhof saved a total of three break points during opener.
Haase and Koolhof won six points in a row to recover from a 4-0 tie-break deficit and clinch two consecutive set points -- which they failed to convert.
The Zverev brothers saved one more set point before they realized their second set point to win the opener.
However, Haase and Koolhof kept their focus as they broke the German duo early on in the second set and then held on to their serve to force a decider.
The Zverev brothers saved the first match point in the match tie-break but couldn't save the second match point as Dutch duo claimed a win after just over an hour and a half of action.
Haase and Koolhof won 77 percent of their first serve points, converted just 1-of-6 of their break point chances but saved 3-of-3 of the break point opportunities they faced during the match.
Haase and Koolhof will now have a day off as they will play their quarter-final match on Friday against either Martin Fucsovics and Guido Pella or Radu Albot and Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Haase and Koolhof are now certainly targeting to potentially win it all as their Monte Carlo campaign also includes a shock first round win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.
