ATP Munich: Fucsovics tops Sonego after three hours. Rain halts the action

The opening day of the BMW Open in Munich has produced only two matches, with the rain halting the action and forcing the organizers to stage ten singles encounters on Tuesday. In one of the most extended best-of-three clashes on the Tour in 2019, the 8th seed Marton Fucsovics defeated a qualifier Lorenzo Sonego 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 in three hours and four minutes, winning one point more than the Italian and coming from a 5-3 down in the decider. This was the 13th win for the Marton this season and he had to give his best to notch it, erasing that deficit and converting the fourth match point in the tie break to advance into the last 16.

Both players scored five breaks from 29 chances overall and it was Sonego who made a better start, breaking in game three after a double fault from Marton. The Italian wasted three game points at 4-3 and Fucsovics broke back after a loose drop shot from his rival, leveling the score at 4-4 and extending the battle in the opening set. Marton had the momentum now and clinched the set with another break at 6-5 when Lorenzo placed a smash beyond the baseline. Sonego saved four out of five break points in set number two and grabbed the last three games from 4-3 down, breaking Fucsovics in game nine and closing it with a service winner in the next game for a 6-4 and a chance to fight for the tenth triumph this year.

Lorenzo led 3-1 and 5-3 although it wasn't to be for him, getting broken while serving for the match at 5-4 and falling short in the tie break despite being two points away from the finish line four times, allowing Marton to win it 10-8 and advance into the next round. Taro Daniel took down Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 46 minutes, saving seven out of nine break points and scoring four breaks from seven opportunities to wrap up the win in straight sets. The Japanese opened a 5-1 lead in the first set, bringing it home in the tenth game and controlling the scoreboard in set number two as well before scoring the crucial break at 4-4 that pushed him over the top.
