Belinda Bencic reveals what made her a better player in tough moments
An in-form Swiss Belinda Bencic managed to find the form at the end of 2018 on the lower-ranked events and shift that momentum into 2019, winning already 19 matches on the Tour so far this year and lifting the title in Dubai, the first since 2015. Belinda was also the semi-finalist at Indian Wells and she was off to a great start in Charleston as well, scoring two dominant wins to reach the third round. The Swiss defeated Allie Kiick 6-0, 6-3 in 54 minutes in the second round to enter the last 16, happy with the way she performed both in this match and this season in general.
"I'm really happy with the way I played today, very aggressive from the start of the match, with good timing and great movement around the court. Things looked good for me and the second set was more like a fight, something I was ready for and I'm happy to go through. This was my 19th win on the Tour this season and it is amazing to hear that, especially after not winning that many matches in the entire 2018 on the Tour. With more wins, your ranking always improves and that is one of my goals in 2019, to be a more consistent player.
The difference between Belinda from 2014 that reached the US Open quarter-final at the age of 17 and Belinda from today is that the youngster had nothing to lose, coming out from juniors and facing your idols all the court, no points to defend and no worries to trouble your game. Now, you are more experienced but also more nervous, with points to defend and many matches that you should win, which is not always easy. I hope I'm a wise player now, my injuries and the time off the court made me a better player but also as a person, helping me to learn so many things and see a different perspective, so I'm grateful it happened already at the age of 21 or 22."
