Borna Coric rates Halle triumph over Roger Federer as his best win ever
Ranked inside the top-20 for the last eight months, Borna Coric had made impressive progress in 2018, winning the title in Halle and scoring 40 wins on the Tour overall. The young Croat has played in the fourth round at the last four Majors and already had some strong runs at Masters 1000 events, playing in the final of Shanghai against Novak Djokovic last year. Coric was off to a solid start of 2019 as well, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open, the semi-final in Dubai and quarters in Miami and Monte Carlo, gathering points and hoping to enter the top-10 at some point this season.
Borna played well in Monte Carlo before losing to Fabio Fognini in three sets, finding time to answer some interesting questions for reddit.com. Asked about the best friends on the Tour, Borna mentioned the Moldovan Radu Albot and the Serb Pedja Krstin, unveiling Goran Ivanisevic and Ivan Ljubicic as the favorite players while he was growing up. Riccardo Piatti and Ivan Ljubicic taught him the most about tennis and Borna also confirmed he is doing most of the things with the left arm and only plays tennis with the right. Before matches, Borna likes to meditate a little bit or play cards, eating pasta as his favorite meal before the competition.
The Croat admits he would love to win Wimbledon and that the best atmosphere he witnessed on the court was against Rafael Nadal at the US Open in the night session in 2015 when he managed to win a set. While not being able to pick the favorite tournament, Coric revealed clay as his ideal surface, aiming to become world no. 1 in this very strong era with a lot of fantastic players around. The toughest match in terms of the mental challenge was the Davis Cup tie against the USA in Zadar last year, also the final against France where he played on a very high level. Speaking about Novak Djokovic, Borna admitted they are very close friends and that the Serb helped him while he was younger.
As was expected, Coric highlighted Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray as the toughest players to compete against on the Tour and he urges fans to go to Split and Dubrovnik if they visit Croatia. Asked about his best match in a career so far, Borna opted for his win over Roger Federer in the final of Halle last year when he won the biggest title so far, toppling the great Swiss 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 after saving two set points in the opening set tie break and a superb performance in the decider.
