Bruno Soares comments on Novak Djokovic's role in Kermode's resignation
In an interview to Saque e Voleio, the ATP Player's Council member Bruno Soares commented on the situation involving the ATP Chief Executive and President Chris Kermode leaving the board at the end of the year. Soares said: "I had 30 around meetings, not only from the Council, additional things, guys who go in the council, tournament directors, so we spend a lot of time there. We do not decide anything. We just make the council go on away. And I think unity is the most important thing we need. Even in the conversations with Grand Slams, players are not united everyone looks at his own interests, they come and go. Then a new generation comes out and the Tournament is always there. We are fighting for the prize money increases, we trust what we think it's right. The council has been active for 10 or 12 years. We really want to be there. There is a closer conversation with the tournament, and that's the goal because everyone wants a much better tour. Tournaments make more money, players earn more. If tournaments are better, the better is for players. In the end business in the same."
"My opinion is even more similar to the majority of people: ATP system is a pretty complicated one. You have the CEO that takes care of both parts, many times with a conflict of interest, and the man has to be there leading this confusion, this dilemma. Novak Djokovic wasn't the only one who took a decision. What we said now is to bring someone from an external side, a qualified company, and analyze the whole system we have. Is that the best system for tennis? Tennis is a very private sport, everyone knows it. Do we need a CEO and Chairman? An external committee?"
